Having been a self-employed contractor to senior positions in large commercial landscape companies, Steve started in the Landscape and Construction industry in 1995, having progressed from an apprentice on the tools through to roles as Estimator and Project Manager.
Working with small to large commercial clients, he has a thorough knowledge of the challenges that business owners and managers face on a day-to-day basis.
Steve works with these companies to facilitate their individual training needs.
Steve is available to discuss all areas of the training industry with clients of all sizes.
Matt Rawlinson
Director
After selling his last business, he took on a role as an Apprentice Carpenter in the construction industry, at the age of 40. Matt was absolutely oblivious to how much hard work was involved. During this process, he observed first hand, the issues that tradies have in running their own businesses from day to day.
This is where the concept for Qld Small Business Courses was borne. Helping people transition from worker to business owner, then helping them grow and develop their own teams. Matt has over 15 years of management experience across a range of industries with both SMEs and Global organisations.

Wendy Owen
Director
Wendy has over 31 years of experience in administration, legal services, quality, and compliance. Whilst commencing her career in legal firms, Wendy has been able to extrapolate the skills she obtained and become an exceptional senior manager within the vocational education and training (VET) industry.
As a specialist within the VET industry and a hands-on management approach, Wendy has the ability to clearly articulate and understand federal, state-based and governing body contractual requirements, enabling her to implement organisational quality and compliance frameworks to ensure operational adherence and contractual performance.
Andrew Brigg
Trainer and Assessor
Andrew Brigg has been involved in the landscaping industry for over 25 years, working extensively in the commercial field. He is experienced as a trainer and a supervisor with extensive knowledge in landscape construction.
Andrew is passionate about delivering high-quality training and mentorship to provide a skilled workforce for the sector. He utilises a person-centred approach to training to develop a training program for each student.
Felicity Capelli
Trainer and Assessor
Felicity has been contributing to the horticultural industry since 1999. Through working in wholesale and retail nurseries in Queensland and South Australia, as well as running a garden design, installation, and maintenance business, Felicity has developed a passion for Australian plants and the environments they support.
Inspired by her own horticultural trainers and mentors over the years, she endeavours to provide the most meaningful direction and development to help people succeed in whichever sector of the horticultural industry they find suits them and is now in her fifth year of training learners of all ages and abilities.
The combination of Felicity’s skills in horticulture, business, and training brings her a broad understanding of the horticultural industry and the pathways to success.

Justin Doyle
Trainer and Assessor
Justin has gained a wealth of experience from more than 25 years of experience in the landscape, civil and training industries in Australia and overseas.
His exposure to the many facets and diversities of the industries has allowed a breadth of knowledge to be acquired across the board.
Justin’s career followed a natural progression of apprentice, landscape assistant, Foreman, business owner, Project Manager to Trainer. From the outset, his level of commitment to producing a high-end service gained a reputation amongst clients, landscape architects/designers and pool builders. This lead to involvement in many notable projects, developments and displays in the Melbourne and South East Queensland landscape and garden scene.
He has been responsible for the design and construction of multiple high-end residential projects, as well as the management and construction of commercial and urban developments. Justin has managed the construction of projects that have consistently won industry awards in both Victoria and Queensland.
Eric Eller
Trainer and Assessor
Eric has operated his own Landscape construction company since 1993 and continues to consult to both commercial landscapers and residential clients keeping his knowledge current. Eric has designed and constructed both commercial and residential projects in South East Queensland including resorts, retirement living, display homes and high end residential projects. Eric is an active member of Landscape Queensland and was one of the first in Queensland to be recognised as a Master Landscaper.
As a trainer and assessor, Eric is passionate about the landscaping and horticultural industries and thoroughly enjoys educating the next generation of horticulturists and landscapers.
Katherine Purcell
Trainer and Assessor
From a very young age, Katherine has been passionate about Horticulture. Prior to any formal education, she was already fascinated with plants and observed how they worked. She was driven to learn more.
She excelled in horticultural education, even moving schools for a more advanced horticultural program where she was able to work in a retail nursery environment. This expanded her passion beyond just the plants themselves and into production techniques and all other aspects of horticulture. She consistently received awards for her horticultural achievements in school.
Upon entering the workforce, Katherine has loved learning from those in the industry and teaching her peers. She loves watching others progress through the industry and having the opportunity to share her passion through training. She has worked in some of Brisbane’s biggest nurseries for over a decade.
The combination of Katherine’s passion for horticulture and her experience in the industry brings her a rounded and impressive understanding of the horticultural industry, and a prime candidate for training.
PETER COTTRELL
TRAINER AND ASSESSOR
Peter Cottrell has been involved in the horticulture industry for 30 years. He has worked in varied roles across the industry, such as a nursery assistant, small business operator, trainer and assessor, learning material writer/reviewer, and horticultural project manager. Peter has a passion for plants and prides himself on having quite the green thumb.
Since 2010, Peter has translated his skill and enjoyment for horticulture into training and assessing. He has delivered horticultural training and assessment to a diverse range of people from locations such as South-East Queensland and New South Wales to Cape York and the Torres Strait.
The combination of Peter’s experience in horticulture, operating a small business, and training and assessing, allow him to provide a fully rounded training experience that allows other people to express their passion for horticulture and succeed.
Penny Ralph
Trainer Support
Penny Ralph has been working in administration and legal services for over forty years. She has gained experience in a variety of roles from Managing Law Clerk in one of the largest law firms in Australia to being Office Manager in one of the biggest teaching hospitals in the UK (where she moved to Australia from in 2003).
Since moving to Queensland from Western Australia in 2019, Penny has loved the environment of Queensland and endeavours to contribute to the community in whatever ways she can. Her wealth of experience and ability in both management and administration contribute to her being essential to ensuring students’ results and compliance are consistently at the highest standard. She endeavours to enable students to get the best outcomes possible from their training.
Shaun Waterton
Trainer and Assessor
Shaun is an experienced and qualified Trainer & Assessor in the Landscaping and Horticultural Industry and also holds his QBCC Builder Restricted to Structural Landscaping Licence Number: 1054759.
Shaun has extensive experience in business management, research development, leadership, education, training and assessment. He is enthusiastic about leading teams of people or individuals to succeed and achieve their personal goals.
Working nationally and internationally as a research developer for leading leather manufacturers in the processing & manufacturing sectors. Shaun has been able to extend his expertise to other areas of industry and interests when he branched into the Landscaping and Horticultural Industry in 2002 and worked with leading Nurseries & Suppliers. Following his passion for leadership in landscaping & horticulture, Shaun established Botanicorp Pty Ltd as a reputable Structural Landscaping Installation and Horticultural Maintenance company in 2004.
Continuing with his own professional development, and passion for the Landscaping, Horticultural and Manufacturing Industry, Shaun became a Trainer & Assessor completing his TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment. He strives to educate and share his knowledge and experience with students who are seeking further education and qualifications in these areas.
Shane Watterson
Trainer and Assessor
Shane’s experience has been gained from working in a variety of industries over the past 30 years including Transport, Landscaping, Construction and Training starting from labourer to site supervisor. Daily tasks involving the correct and safe use of tools and equipment plus operating of heavy vehicles and machinery.
Shane believes in establishing rapport and gaining trust very important when dealing with both clients and students. He finds training and helping people gain knowledge from previous experience is one of the most satisfying aspects of this industry, ensuring we all get home safe to our family and friends.
